It is one of the biggest global problems all over the world. Talking of its definition it is defined asthe practice of having children engage in economic activity, on part or -time basis. The practice deprives children of their childhood, and is harmful to their physical and mental development. Talking about the numbers it is 245 million overall child labors out of which maximum number is in India and maximum percentage is in sub-saharan countries.
The main reason for the child labor in all the countries is poverty and lack of good schools and it is a major problem in a big country like India and the small and poor African countries and countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan etc.
But there is another reason for the involvement of children in these activities sometimes even full time and that is because of the greed of the big companies fr the cheap labour and for that they break each and every law for examples we can have companies like Walmart in USA, which was fined also and the other one is Nike.
International Labour Organisation estimates that agriculture at 60 percent is the largest employer of child labour in the world, while United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates 70% of child labour is deployed in agriculture and related activities.Outside of agriculture, child labour is observed in almost all informal sectors of the world economy.
Almost every country in the world has laws relating to and aimed at preventing child labour. International Labour Organisation has helped set international law, which most countries have signed on and ratified. The global Music against Child Labour Initiative was launched in 2013 in order to involve socially excluded children in structured musical activity and education in efforts to help protect them from child labour.
The presence of a large number of child labourers is regarded as a serious issue in terms of economic welfare. Children who work fail to get necessary education. They do not get the opportunity to develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and psychologically. In terms of the physical condition of children, children are not ready for long monotous work because they become exhausted more quickly than adults. This reduces their physical conditions and makes the children more vulnerable to disease. Children in hazardous working conditions are even in worse condition. Children who work, instead of going to school, will remain illiterate which limits their ability to contribute to their own well being as well as to community they live in.
Efforts are made but it will not be eiminated till the time we people aren’t ready to refuse and boycott it.
